Meta offers broader Instagram opt‑out and signs EU AI Transparency Code
Meta has been harvesting publicly posted photos, videos, captions and comments from Instagram since 2023 to train its generative AI models. Following pressure from European regulators, the company introduced an official opt‑out form that was available to EU users under GDPR and expanded it globally, including the United States, in early 2026. A step‑by‑step guide now shows users how to submit the objection and adjust privacy settings to prevent their public Instagram content from being used for AI training.
In parallel, Meta confirmed it will sign the European Union AI Act Code of Practice on Transparency of AI‑Generated Content. The move follows Meta’s April 2024 announcement to label AI‑generated media on its platforms and the launch of a research demo detection tool. By joining industry initiatives such as the Partnership on AI and the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, Meta aims to develop durable, interoperable solutions that help users identify AI‑generated images without overwhelming them with multiple labels.
