Meta Plans to Lease Excess AI Computing Power as New Cloud Business

Meta Platforms announced a shift in its artificial‑intelligence strategy, indicating it will create a cloud unit to lease out surplus AI‑compute capacity. Unlike its peers Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft, which already monetize data‑center resources, Meta has previously used all its infrastructure for internal workloads. The proposed change could provide an additional revenue stream to fund ongoing data‑center expansion, though executives caution that the cloud unit is unlikely to match the profitability of established rivals in the short term.

Analysts note that Meta’s stock trades at a discount to the S&P 500, and the move may help narrow that gap if the company successfully commercialises the excess capacity. Investors are awaiting further details during Meta’s second‑quarter earnings call scheduled for July 29, when the impact of the new cloud service on the company’s valuation will become clearer.
