Meta platforms suffer worldwide outage, disabling Facebook, Instagram and Messenger

On Friday afternoon, June 12, 2026, Meta's core services—including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Threads and WhatsApp—experienced a simultaneous failure that left millions of users offline globally. Users reported the problem within minutes, and outage reporting sites such as Downdetector were overwhelmed, logging more than 145,000 fault reports across the platforms.

The services began to recover around 4:30 p.m. local time, but functionality remained intermittent for several hours. Hungarian cyber‑security expert Zoltán Rajnai attributed the disruption to a regional issue, possibly a power outage or an internet‑service failure affecting one or more data centres, and did not rule out a potential DDoS attack. The incident echoed a similar global Meta outage two years earlier, but no official comment from Meta was available at the time of reporting.
