Meta Quest 3 update enables refresh rates up to 240 Hz
Meta has introduced extended refresh rate support for the Meta Quest 3 via the HorizonOS v2.7 update. Standard users can now access up to 207 Hz at full native resolution, while developers can reach up to 240 Hz through developer mode. This capability is exclusive to the Quest 3 hardware; the Quest 3S and Quest 2 are not compatible due to different display panel limitations.
While the higher refresh rates can significantly reduce motion blur, they come with technical trade-offs. Using these extended rates may lead to increased headset heating, reduced battery life, and potential loss of graphical detail in fine textures or small text. The high speeds are best suited for graphically lightweight experiences such as rhythm games, competitive eSports, or simple racing simulators.
Developers are cautioned not to make these high refresh rates a mandatory requirement for applications, as many current tools and video decoders struggle with speeds beyond 144 Hz. For instance, Quest’s Application Spacewarp currently cannot handle extrapolation beyond 120 FPS on the Quest 3 SoC. Some applications, such as Virtual Desktop, have already begun implementing support up to 144 Hz.
