Meta restores suspended accounts for California queer nightclubs

Several queer nightclubs and promoters in Los Angeles and San Francisco recently regained access to their Facebook and Instagram pages after Meta suspended their accounts without warning or explanation. The suspensions impacted prominent venues including Club Cobra, Club Chico, Catch One, and San Francisco’s historic The Stud.

Club owners reported significant business disruptions due to the loss of digital visibility. Mitch Edelson, owner of Catch One, estimated that ticket sales fell by as much as 80 percent following the removal of his social media presence. Marty Sokol, owner of Club Cobra and Club Chico, noted that AI-driven search engines incorrectly listed his clubs as permanently closed during the blackout.

The issue drew intervention from California state officials, including Assemblymember Mark González and State Senator Scott Wiener, who pressured Meta to reverse the bans. While the accounts have largely been restored, Meta has not provided specific reasons for the suspensions. The incidents follow Meta’s announcement regarding new AI systems for content enforcement, leading to concerns that automated scans may be misidentifying nightlife content as violations of community standards.
