Meta Smart Glasses Face Lawsuits and Texas Investigation Over Privacy Violations

Meta's AI‑enabled smart glasses, sold under the Ray‑Ban and Oakley brands, are under intense legal and regulatory scrutiny. Multiple lawsuits allege that Meta employees reviewed recordings captured by the devices, including intimate and sexual content, without proper safeguards. Civil‑rights groups, led by the ACLU, have filed complaints against Meta's plans to add facial‑recognition capabilities to the glasses, warning of mass surveillance risks.

In Texas, Attorney General Ken Paxton has opened a state investigation to determine whether Meta illegally collects data from residents through the glasses. The company has responded by updating the devices to prevent the recording‑indicator LED from being concealed, though earlier reports indicated the light could be hidden, fueling public distrust. Despite the controversy, Meta sold more than seven million of the smart glasses last year, highlighting rapid market growth amid ongoing privacy concerns.
