Meta faces lawsuit over smart glasses capturing private footage
Meta is facing a proposed class-action lawsuit in California involving more than 70 plaintiffs. The lawsuit alleges that the company’s AI-powered smart glasses captured intimate and private footage—including scenes of people undressing, using bathrooms, and entering passwords—without the knowledge or consent of the subjects.
The plaintiffs claim that this sensitive video and audio data was transmitted to contractors in Kenya, specifically through the subcontractor Sama, to be reviewed and labeled for the purpose of training Meta’s artificial intelligence systems. Some users reported that the recording feature was unintentionally triggered by the voice assistant.
In response to mounting privacy concerns and backlash, reports indicate Meta is developing a camera-free version of its smart glasses, reportedly called Luna, which would rely on microphones and voice assistants rather than visual sensors.
