Meta plans camera-free smart glasses to address privacy concerns

Meta is reportedly developing a new line of smart glasses, internally referred to as ‘Project Luna’, which would lack integrated cameras for photos and videos to address growing privacy concerns. These glasses, potentially slated for release in late 2026, are expected to focus on voice-activated AI assistance, possibly integrating Meta’s ‘Muse’ AI agent. The removal of the camera could also allow for a slimmer design, making the devices look more like standard eyewear.

The shift comes amid debates regarding the surveillance potential of current smart glasses. Existing models often use a small LED to signal recording, but this light can be easily missed or obscured by stickers. While removing the camera mitigates video privacy risks, concerns remain regarding microphones that could allow for covert audio recording.

In response to these privacy challenges, a developer has created an application called ‘ZuckOff’ designed to detect Meta smart glasses, highlighting the ongoing tension between wearable technology and personal privacy.
