Meta smart glasses spark privacy debate and venue bans

The rise of smart glasses, led by Meta's Ray-Ban models, is sparking intense debates regarding privacy and public etiquette. While the technology allows for hands-free AI interaction, calls, and easy photo or video capture, it has raised significant concerns about non-consensual filming and potential harassment.

In response to these concerns, the UK-based pub chain Wetherspoons has banned the use of smart glasses for filming within its nearly 800 locations. Similarly, organizers of Comic Con in Northern Ireland have implemented restrictions. Conversely, content creators like Pearse Vallely in Belfast have found success using the devices to create positive, high-engagement social media content on platforms like TikTok.

Industry experts suggest that while smart glasses may not entirely replace smartphones, they are expected to evolve from simple accessories into primary computing devices by the mid-2030s, driven by advancements in augmented reality and artificial intelligence.
