Meta sued over AI‑driven layoffs that targeted workers on medical and parental leave
A group of 26 former Meta employees filed a federal lawsuit in Oakland, California, alleging that the company used internal artificial‑intelligence tools – including a system called “Metamate,” keystroke‑monitoring software and AI‑token usage dashboards – to compile a list of workers for a mass layoff. The plaintiffs say the AI‑based scoring could not be accumulated by employees who were on protected medical, parental, pregnancy or disability leave, causing them to be selected disproportionately. The layoffs, announced in May 2026, affected roughly 8,000 staff members, about 10 % of Meta’s global workforce. The lawsuit claims the practice violated the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act and related state laws, and cites “disparate impact” liability. Meta’s spokesperson responded that the claims lack merit, stating, “Workforce management and organizational decisions were and are made by people, not AI.” The plaintiffs seek a preliminary injunction to halt the layoffs, reinstatement, and damages.
