Meta suspends San Francisco queer venue Powerhouse accounts
Meta has suspended the Instagram and Facebook accounts of Powerhouse, a long-standing LGBTQ+ venue in San Francisco. The accounts were reinstated following community backlash and accusations of censorship.
Advocates, including Honey Mahogany, co-founder of San Francisco’s transgender district, have expressed concern that Meta is disproportionately targeting queer venues and content. Mahogany noted that losing these accounts is devastating for small businesses operating on thin margins, as they serve as primary communication tools for reaching the community.
This incident follows similar recent events, such as the temporary suspension of The Stud’s Instagram account and the suspension of a national Gay Pride Facebook page. Advocacy group GLAAD has condemned Meta’s actions, citing concerns in its Social Media Safety Index regarding the suppression of LGBTQ voices, inadequate protections against hate, and persistent enforcement failures on Meta’s platforms.
