Meta Tackles Memory Shortage and Slower AI Progress

Meta has built a custom chip called Vistara that uses Compute Express Link (CXL) to bridge DDR4 memory modules to its new servers that run on DDR5. The solution lets the company add a separate DDR4 memory pool alongside DDR5, boosting total system memory to about 1 TB per node despite a global DDR5 shortage and high prices.

At an internal town hall, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company's AI agent development has been slower than expected. He emphasized that Meta remains on a “journey to superintelligence,” noting large AI investments and recent steps such as making the employee‑data training program opt‑in after morale concerns.
