Meta tests Community Notes in 16 Latin American countries
Meta has launched a testing phase for its Community Notes system across 16 Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America, including Argentina, Mexico, and Colombia. The crowdsourced tool, which allows registered users to add context or correct misleading information on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, is modeled after the system used by X.
This initiative marks a strategic shift toward replacing Meta’s existing professional fact-checking model, which has relied on partnerships with accredited newsrooms and specialized agencies since 2016. While the company aims to democratize content moderation, the move has drawn significant criticism from media watchdogs and the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN). Experts warn that relying on user consensus rather than professional editorial standards could exacerbate the spread of disinformation, particularly in a region facing political polarization and the rise of AI-generated content.
During this initial trial, the notes will remain hidden from the general public while Meta evaluates the system’s effectiveness. Notably, Brazil, Meta’s largest market in the region, was not included in this initial rollout. Meta has stated it will only proceed with a full public launch once it is confident the system functions adequately.
