Meta tests robotics to automate data center operations
Meta is testing various robotic systems to automate repetitive tasks within its data centers. According to current and former employees, the company is evaluating hardware from vendors such as Kinova, ABB, and Watney Robotics to handle operations like power cycling servers, network cable management, and remote device restarts.
One specific trial involves using a Kinova Gen3 robotic arm to manage electricity or power cycles. Other tests include specialized devices for swapping networking cables and mechanical fingers designed to press power buttons on hardware like Mac Minis. While technical barriers like high costs and equipment failure have decreased due to advancements in AI and cheaper hardware, the shift has caused anxiety among staff. One worker estimated that successful deployment could replace approximately 80 percent of certain technical roles.
Meta has responded to these developments by stating it is actively hiring and training workers, noting a national shortage of skilled infrastructure workers. However, internal communications at facilities such as the one in Altoona, Iowa, have reflected concerns regarding job security and the potential for the company to use automation to reduce skill requirements and consolidate roles.
