Meta tightens rules on coded anti‑Semitic content in Australia

Meta officials testified to Australia’s Royal Commission into Anti‑Semitism and Social Cohesion, explaining that the company has begun removing posts that use the terms “Zionism” or “Zionist” as coded substitutes for “Jews”. Director of content policy Benjamin Good said the platform now prohibits anti‑Semitic conspiracy theories that replace “Jewish” with “Zionist” to evade hate‑speech filters, citing the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition as a basis.

The company highlighted collaboration with global experts and Jewish advocacy groups in developing the policy. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese urged other platforms, such as X, to cooperate with the inquiry after some apps were reported to have declined participation. The Royal Commission will continue hearings in Melbourne on July 13 and in Sydney on July 20, focusing on university campuses and Jewish community security.
