Meta to build $13 billion AI data center in Alberta, Canada

Meta Platforms announced a C$13 billion (US$9.1 billion) investment to construct its first Canadian data centre in Sturgeon County, Alberta. The 1‑gigawatt facility will be the company's 33rd data centre globally and its largest outside the United States. It will be powered by a dedicated natural‑gas‑fired plant – the Greenlight Electricity Centre – being built by Pembina Pipeline and partners, with a 932‑megawatt plant expected to operate by late 2030. Capital Power has also signed a long‑term supply agreement to provide 250 MW of electricity for the site.

The project will create more than 3,000 construction jobs and about 300 permanent positions, and is projected to generate roughly C$250 million annually in taxes, royalties and other revenues for Albertans. Meta will invest about C$60 million in local roads, water systems and other infrastructure, and will fund the new generation and grid upgrades required for the centre. Environmental safeguards include a closed‑loop liquid‑cooling system that eliminates operational water draw and a commitment to offset electricity use with clean‑energy purchases. Alberta Technology Minister Nate Glubish called the development “a big deal for Alberta,” while Meta vice‑president Gary Demasi said the company was “thrilled to announce Meta’s first Canadian data centre in Alberta.”
