Meta implements encryption for smart glasses AI privacy
Meta is developing a privacy system called ‘Private Processing’ for its smart glasses to secure AI-driven interactions. Because the small form factor of wearable glasses limits on-device computing, intensive AI tasks like contextual search and live translation must be offloaded to cloud servers.
To protect user data during this process, Meta is implementing confidential virtual machines (CVMs) and specialized encrypted servers. This architecture is designed so that neither Meta nor host operating systems can access the user’s data while it is being transferred, processed, or stored. CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated at Meta Connect that this will allow certain AI features to run in secure servers where ‘nobody, including Meta, can have access to your data.’
Additionally, Meta is expanding its hardware lineup, including audio-only glasses equipped with six microphones but no camera, and integrating its Muse AI agent to assist with voice-based daily tasks. The company has also implemented a privacy fix that stops recording if the device's capture light is covered.
