Meta to maintain sales of AI smart glasses despite privacy backlash

Meta has announced it will not withdraw its AI-powered smart glasses from the market despite growing privacy concerns and backlash regarding their integrated cameras. Alex Himel, director of Meta’s eyewear division, compared the current controversy to the initial reception of smartphones equipped with cameras.

The dispute centers on the ability of users to bypass the glasses’ recording indicator light. Himel noted a “cat-and-mouse game” where individuals attempt to disable the LED to film others covertly. Meta stated that its algorithms are designed to detect such tampering and intervene, and the company is working on improving both the hardware and software for future models.

In the Netherlands, several organizations have threatened legal action to halt sales due to privacy risks, and there have been calls in Parliament for a broader ban. The optical retailer Hans Anders has suspended sales of the glasses following the outcry. Similar restrictions have emerged in Norway, where a temporary ban has been announced for many public spaces.
