Meta to pay up to $18 billion in settlement over teen mental health

Meta has reached a historic settlement to resolve federal lawsuits in the United States regarding the impact of Facebook and Instagram on teenage mental health. The company will pay between $17 billion and $18 billion in fines and indemnities, a figure that includes approximately $11.5 billion related to separate Cambridge Analytica claims. The settlement, approved by a California district judge, will be paid out over a decade.

As part of the agreement, Meta must implement significant technical changes to protect users under 18. These measures include establishing a two-hour daily usage limit, implementing an automatic app lockout between midnight and 6:00 AM, and enhancing age verification processes. The company will also provide increased parental controls and the ability to hide ‘like’ counts.

While the settlement marks a major legal milestone, critics such as former Meta engineering director Arturo Béjar warn that the agreement allows the company to define what constitutes harm and may not fully address the addictive nature of platform design.
