Meta to report child safety cases directly to India's cybercrime portal
Meta has agreed to report child sexual abuse and child safety matters directly to India’s Cybercrime portal, managed by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C). This decision follows intense scrutiny from the Indian government and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) regarding the alleged circulation and promotion of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) through advertisements on Instagram.
Previously, Meta reported such cases to a US-based agency, which then coordinated with Indian authorities. Under the new arrangement, the company will establish a direct reporting channel with Indian law enforcement. The Indian government has emphasized that online safety for children is a “non-negotiable” fundamental principle for any social media platform operating in the country, warning that platforms failing to take proactive measures to identify and remove harmful content could face government action.
The NCPCR has continued its inquiry into the matter, summoning Meta India’s managing director and head for formal hearings to determine the facts surrounding the alleged advertisements. This development is seen as a significant first step toward strengthening digital safeguards, though officials stress that more comprehensive measures are required to ensure the safety of minors online.
