Meta updates AI glasses with LED tamper protection amid privacy concerns

On July 7, 2026 Meta published a privacy FAQ for its AI glasses, explaining the small white capture LED that blinks briefly for a photo and continues to blink while recording video. The company announced a mandatory firmware update that disables the camera whenever the LED is covered or physically tampered with, applying to second‑generation Ray‑Ban, Oakley and Meta‑branded glasses and retroactively to already modified units.

Meta also said it will remove ads, posts and Marketplace listings that promote LED‑tampering services and will pursue legal action against sellers of such services. The update is intended to prevent covert recording by ensuring the LED remains visible.

Separately, the Financial Times reported that Meta is prototyping “super‑sensing” glasses that continuously capture audio and take periodic photos to feed an AI assistant. The prototype, codenamed Aperol and Bellini, is not planned to illuminate the capture LED, raising new privacy questions. The same week, New York’s court system announced a ban on smart glasses in all state courthouses, effective July 20.

These developments highlight Meta’s dual approach: strengthening LED‑based bystander notice for current devices while exploring future models that may forgo the LED entirely.
