Meta updates platform terms of use amid AI and deepfake concerns
Meta has modified the terms of use for Facebook and Instagram following criticism regarding how the company handles third-party content. The revised terms clarify that automated software may collect content for “advertising and business products,” as well as for maintaining security and integrity. Notably, the company removed the word “train” from the list of purposes, addressing concerns that the original language would allow the use of content to develop artificial intelligence without compensation or contract.
Separately, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has addressed the rise of “slop content” and AI-generated deepfakes on the platform. Mosseri noted that while the company does not intend to ban AI content entirely due to the difficulty of identification, it is investigating how to handle accounts that use AI to mass-copy the routines and styles of original creators. This issue has become particularly prominent as hyper-realistic AI avatars mimic real comedians to redirect users to external sites.
