Meta updates smart glasses to prevent covert recording
Meta is rolling out a software update for its AI-powered smart glasses to close a privacy loophole that allowed users to record video covertly. Previously, users could bypass the device's visual warning system by starting a recording and then covering the capture LED, allowing the camera to continue operating without alerting bystanders. Under the new update, the camera will automatically stop working if the LED is obstructed during an active recording session.
Alex Himel, Meta’s vice president of augmented reality, stated that the company will continue to release updates to ensure the capture LED reliably alerts the public. Meta is also launching a marketing campaign to educate users on the importance of the LED indicator.
In a separate development related to hardware security, Meta has been granted a patent for a privacy mute circuit. This technology would allow for a physical interruption of power to the camera sensor, providing a hardware-level safeguard against unauthorized recording that remains effective even if software is compromised.
