Meta WhatsApp API pricing changes impact business operations
Meta is implementing new pricing structures for the WhatsApp Business API that will impact companies operating at scale. Starting October 1, service messages—free-text responses sent by humans or bots within a 24-hour window—will be charged per unit delivered, removing previous volume discounts. Additionally, utility messages such as order confirmations and delivery notices will lose their previous exemptions.
These changes are already affecting secondary services. For instance, Blip, a conversational intelligence company, has transitioned its ViraTexto audio transcription tool from a free service to a paid model. Blip stated that the shift was necessary to pass on increased infrastructure costs resulting from Meta’s new pricing policies. The tool now offers prepaid packages, such as 50 transcriptions for R$ 4.90, to ensure service continuity.
While the standard WhatsApp Business app remains free for small businesses using manual responses, the new costs specifically target the API infrastructure used by larger operations and automated systems. Meta’s AI agent, Meta Business Agent, is also being charged based on token consumption rather than message count.
