Meta‑analysis of 25,831 children shows empathy develops through relationships, not theory

A new meta‑analysis covering 25,831 children and adolescents finds that empathy is primarily built through authentic relationships and repeated social experiences rather than through theoretical instruction. The study, published in Psychological Bulletin, links strong emotion‑regulation skills with higher empathic and prosocial behaviour. The findings were highlighted at ParentED Fest 2026 in Bucharest, where experts including Daniel J. Siegel emphasized the protective role of emotionally available adults for long‑term child development. Organisers, the Kids Hero Foundation and local partners, presented the research as a key evidence base for improving mental‑health and well‑being policies in Romania.

The analysis draws on 58 studies and underscores that consistent adult presence is a major predictor of children’s emotional well‑being, relationship skills, and future success, suggesting a shift in educational focus toward social‑emotional learning.
