Metabolic health experts warn of insulin resistance and medication misuse
Medical experts are addressing the rising prevalence of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, noting how these conditions are being influenced by lifestyle and the misuse of metabolic medications.
In Chile, the popularity of injectable drugs like Ozempic and Mounjaro has surged. Paulina Fernández, an academic at UNAB, explains that while these drugs are designed to improve insulin sensitivity and metabolism by mimicking intestinal hormones, they are frequently misused as aesthetic shortcuts for rapid weight loss. Fernández warns that 20% to 30% of weight lost through these treatments may consist of lean muscle mass, necessitating strength training and adequate protein intake to mitigate loss.
In Mexico, Dr. Lorenzo Castañeda Pacheco highlights that insulin resistance is often a silent condition that can lead to type 2 diabetes without obvious symptoms. He identifies key risk factors including abdominal fat, sedentary lifestyles, and diets high in ultra-processed foods and sugars. Experts recommend regular medical check-ups and consistent physical activity to manage glucose levels and prevent the progression to diabetes.
