Metabolic health linked to early hair loss in men

New research suggests a link between rapid hair loss in men and metabolic health issues. While approximately 30% of men experience baldness before age 30, scientists are looking beyond simple genetics toward endocrine and metabolic factors.

Studies indicate that men carrying certain genes associated with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (now referred to as Polycystic Metabolic Syndrome or PMOS) may face higher rates of male pattern baldness. These individuals also show an increased risk for metabolic complications, including type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, and insulin resistance.

A 2025 meta-analysis reinforced this connection, finding that men with first-degree female relatives diagnosed with PMOS have slightly higher rates of baldness and a tendency toward higher fasting blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure levels.
