Metabolism and physical fitness changes after age 40
Research indicates that metabolism does not undergo a sudden slowdown immediately after age 40. While there is a common belief that energy expenditure drops significantly at this milestone, studies show that energy expenditure remains relatively stable throughout much of adulthood, with more pronounced age-related changes occurring later in life.
However, several physiological shifts can make maintaining weight and fitness more challenging. These include changes in body composition, such as a gradual decrease in muscle mass and an increase in fat tissue. Additionally, physical capacity, strength, and recovery times tend to decline as the body's ability to utilize oxygen and respond to training stimuli changes.
Regular physical activity, particularly strength training, is highlighted as a key factor in mitigating these effects by helping to preserve muscle mass and cardiovascular endurance.
