Metagenomic testing identified the novel coronavirus in 2019

Metagenomic testing, an advanced genetic technique, played a critical role in identifying the novel coronavirus in late 2019. When virologists in China investigated patients with severe, unexplained pneumonia who had visited the Huanan seafood market in Wuhan, they found that the genetic material did not match any known pathogens.

Unlike conventional tests that search for specific, pre-identified viruses or bacteria, metagenomic testing analyzes the entire spectrum of DNA and RNA within a sample without requiring laboratory cultivation of microorganisms. This allowed scientists to recognize the new coronavirus, a breakthrough that Niranjan Nagarajan of the National University of Singapore described as a “revolutionary evolution compared to previous pandemics.”

The rapid identification of the pathogen enabled the swift development of diagnostic tests, treatments, and vaccines. Today, the technique is increasingly utilized in hospital settings for tasks such as diagnosing sepsis and identifying the causes of unexplained illnesses.
