Metal prices strengthen in August amid rising input cost concerns

A report by Centrum indicates that while metal prices showed strength in August, rising input costs pose a threat to the sustainability of the recovery. The metals sector experienced improvements across major segments despite mixed demand conditions.

Globally, hot-rolled coil (HRC) prices rose by approximately 3 per cent month-on-month in both the US and Europe, whereas China's export HRC prices remained largely stable. In India, steel prices saw a significant recovery; rebar prices surged nearly 10 per cent month-on-month and approximately 12 per cent year-on-year. Indian HRC prices also increased by about 2 per cent month-on-month.

The rise in Indian rebar prices was attributed to tighter supply caused by planned maintenance shutdowns at integrated steel plants, lower inventories, and healthy demand. Regarding input costs, trends were mixed: Australian iron ore prices declined by about 2 per cent month-on-month, while coal prices rose.
