Metal sector strikes in Spain see varying results in Murcia and Lugo
In the Murcia region of Spain, the metal industry employers' association reports a low turnout for the first day of a union-called strike. According to data collected from regional companies, approximately 2.8% of workers participated in the stoppage, with 99% of businesses opening as usual. The negotiations for the collective agreement affect roughly 35,000 workers and 8,500 companies. The employers' association reported an illegal demonstration by about 100 strikers near their facilities and has requested authorities to initiate disciplinary proceedings.
In contrast, the metal and metal trade sector in Lugo has reached a preliminary agreement, leading to the cancellation of scheduled strikes. The new agreement for the 2026-2029 period includes a cumulative salary increase of 18% over four years, with specific annual increments of 5% in 2026, 4.5% in 2027 and 2028, and 4% in 2029. The pact also features a clause to protect purchasing power against inflation, a reduction in annual working hours, and improvements regarding medical leave and allowances.
