MetalGreen proposes urban mining in Quito to recover metals from electronic waste

A study from the Universidad Internacional del Ecuador (UIDE) analyzes the feasibility of launching MetalGreen, a sustainable urban mining company in Quito. The initiative focuses on the commercial recovery of strategic metals from waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).

The project addresses environmental and economic challenges, specifically the rising volume of electronic waste and the low rate of formal material recovery. The proposed business model integrates circular economy principles, traceability, and regulatory compliance through processes including collection, classification, dismantling, and the sale of reusable components.
