Metallica: The formation and history of the heavy metal band

The heavy metal band Metallica was formed on October 28, 1981, in Los Angeles, following a response to an advertisement in The Recycler newspaper. The founding members included James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, who met in Southern California. The early lineup also featured guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist Ron McGovney.

The band eventually relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area to recruit bassist Cliff Burton, whose technical skill became a defining element of their sound. Following Burton's death in a bus accident in Sweden in 1986, Jason Newsted joined the group.

Metallica rose to prominence with their 1983 debut album, ‘Kill ’Em All’, which helped popularize the thrash metal genre. Other significant milestones include the release of ‘...And Justice For All’ in 1988 and the self-titled ‘Black Album’ in 1991.
