Metallica's 1983 Debut Album 'Kill 'Em All' Launches American Thrash Metal

In July 1983, Metallica released their debut album Kill 'Em All on Megaforce Records. The record's eight fast, aggressive tracks combined heavy metal and punk influences, establishing the sound that would become thrash metal. It was the first thrash album by an American band, later earning four‑times platinum certification and influencing peers such as Anthrax, Slayer and Megadeth.

A year later, Metallica followed with Ride the Lightning (July 1984), expanding the band's musical ambition and lyrical themes while retaining the speed and intensity of the debut. Band members Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammett described the album as a step toward greater complexity, with songs tackling topics like death, confinement and societal control. Both albums are credited with shaping the direction of heavy metal in the United States and abroad.
