Metals.io launches copper tokens backed by physical metal in Hamburg

Metals.io has launched xCu, a new blockchain-based token representing refined copper. The initial offering consists of 25,000 tokens, each tied to one kilogram of physical copper, totaling 25 tonnes of metal currently stored in a warehouse in Hamburg, Germany.

The project aims to provide retail investors with copper exposure through 24/7 trading on the Etherlink platform, built on the Tezos blockchain. Unlike traditional futures or mining stocks, xCu holders possess a claim on physical, refined copper cathodes rather than unmined resources.

Archax serves as the UK-regulated trustee and compliance partner, while Trilitech provides the technical infrastructure. The copper is held in bonded warehouses, with initial documentation specifically citing the C. Steinweg facility in Hamburg. While the platform offers no minimum investment and no asset management fees, redeeming tokens for physical metal requires identity and anti-money laundering checks, as well as meeting specific weight requirements, such as a 125 kg minimum.

This launch follows Metals.io’s previous tokenization of uranium, gold, cobalt, and nickel.
