MetaMask exits Lido Ethereum validators following security incident

MetaMask is conducting a precautionary exit of its Ethereum validators within the Lido protocol following a security incident reported on September 30, 2026. The company stated the incident involved a portion of its infrastructure but emphasized there is no immediate threat to user wallets.

On-chain analysis by researcher Kaden suggests that 18 out of 19 validators that received block rewards diverted approximately 0.36 ETH to an address linked to Tornado Cash. While MetaMask has not confirmed these specific details, reports indicate that roughly 17,000 validators, representing approximately 523,000 ETH, have already exited the protocol.

Lido expects the remaining validators to complete their exit process by October 7, 2026. The full cycle of exiting and withdrawing funds may take up to 45 days. Lido has advised stETH holders that no action is required on their part, though validators may face penalties or downtime. Meanwhile, Aave founder Stani Kulechov noted that Aave markets remain stable and unaffected by the situation.
