Interbeton facility leaks industrial waste into Kifisos River
Authorities have identified a significant leak of industrial liquid waste from an Interbeton concrete production facility in Metamorfosi, which flowed into the Kifisos River. The leak originated from a settling tank located near the riverbank.
During an inspection conducted by the Hellenic Police's Environmental Protection Department and officials from the Attica Region, investigators observed a continuous flow of waste forming a stream on the ground that led directly into the river. Preliminary testing using pH paper indicated an alkaline reaction, suggesting the presence of hazardous chemical waste.
A 55-year-old man, responsible for ensuring the facility complied with environmental regulations, was arrested. Samples of the waste have been sent for laboratory analysis to determine their exact composition. This incident follows a separate pollution case involving a fuel station in Egaleo just a week prior, raising concerns regarding the ongoing protection of the Kifisos River.
