Metaplanet CEO signals Bitcoin market bottom at Hong Kong summit
Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich expressed optimism regarding Bitcoin (BTC) at the Bitcoin Asia 2026 event in Hong Kong, stating that the market has passed its bottom. Gerovich noted a shift in market participants, suggesting that recent selling was driven by forced liquidations rather than a desire to exit, and that new buyers are likely to hold long-term.
As a Japanese-listed company employing a Bitcoin treasury strategy, Metaplanet holds 43,000 BTC, making it the largest holder among listed companies in Asia. Gerovich highlighted a significant opportunity in Asia, where massive amounts of household wealth remain in low-interest bank deposits. He argued that while direct Bitcoin ownership may face regulatory hurdles for many, investors can gain exposure through regulated equities and products.
Despite the bullish outlook, Metaplanet faces financial and regulatory complexities. The company reported a significant net loss in its recent interim results due to Bitcoin valuation losses. Additionally, the tax advantage of holding Bitcoin through equities in Japan—which currently offers a lower rate than direct crypto ownership—may diminish by 2028 due to potential tax reforms. The company is also navigating changes in how index providers like JPX handle firms with large cryptocurrency holdings.
