Metaplanet launches BitBonds program with initial 200 million yen issuance

Metaplanet, a Tokyo-listed company pursuing a Bitcoin treasury strategy, has launched a new corporate bond issuance program called ‘BitBonds’. The company announced the completion of its inaugural issuance, which consisted of four series of unsecured straight bonds totaling approximately 200 million yen.

The bonds carry annual interest rates ranging from 4.0% to 4.3% with a redemption period of approximately three years. Unlike previous private placements limited to institutional investors, this program aims to provide access to individual investors and business companies through Metaplanet Securities, a subsidiary formed following the acquisition of Siiibo Securities.

Metaplanet views this initiative as a way to capitalize on the shifting Japanese economic environment and the increasing demand for yen-denominated yield products. While the bonds are backed by the company’s overall creditworthiness rather than being collateralized by Bitcoin, the company’s financial standing remains sensitive to Bitcoin price volatility. The bonds are unrated, unsecured, and lack guaranteed liquidity, meaning they may not be easily sold before maturity.
