Meta's 5‑GW Hyperion hub and Amazon's Spanish data center each demand city‑scale power

Amazon Web Services is constructing a new hyperscale data center in the La Cartuja technology park near Seville, Spain. When fully operational, the facility will use about 3,280 GWh of electricity per year—roughly the annual consumption of the city of Zaragoza—and will require a 300‑megawatt grid connection. The site will be equipped with 184 diesel generators as backup, raising concerns about sustainability and the strain on Spain’s power network, which is already seeing competition for high‑capacity connection points among major cloud providers.
