Meta's Business Agent AI Boosts Small Business Customer Service
Meta unveiled its Business Agent, an artificial‑intelligence system that can answer customer queries, qualify leads, manage bookings and process transactions directly within platforms such as WhatsApp and Instagram. The launch was announced at the Conversations conference in London, highlighting the growing race among big‑tech firms—Google, Amazon, Microsoft, OpenAI and Meta—to dominate the emerging market for autonomous AI agents, which analysts project will grow from about $10.9 billion in 2026 to $182.9 billion by 2033.
For small businesses, the technology promises to automate routine tasks that previously required staff. AI agents can sort and categorize emails, schedule appointments, handle FAQ‑style questions and extract data from documents such as invoices with high accuracy, saving time and reducing labor costs. However, experts warn that these tools still struggle with complex decision‑making, exception handling and building customer trust. Cases of double‑bookings, mis‑flagged requests and inappropriate responses have been reported, underscoring the need for human oversight when confidence levels are low or when nuanced judgment is required.
Overall, while agentic AI offers significant efficiency gains for small enterprises, its limitations mean that it should complement rather than replace human staff, especially for tasks that involve judgment, empathy or relationship management.
