Metaxochori: A historic cultural destination in Thessaly

Metaxochori, a traditional settlement located on the eastern slopes of Kissavos in Thessaly, is emerging as a significant cultural destination. Historically known as Retsiani, the village's current name stems from the boom in sericulture (silk production) during the 18th and 19th centuries. This economic prosperity is still visible today through the village's stone mansions, cobbled streets, and unique architecture.

The village maintains a vibrant community life, serving as an inspiration for writers, poets, and artists. Local initiatives, such as those led by the Cultural Leisure Association of Metaxochori, provide year-round programming including concerts, art events, and workshops for children. Thodoris Souliotes, president of the Metaxochori Cultural Association, noted that the village remains lively due to residents who strive daily to preserve its history and architectural splendor.
