Meteorological developments in Almàssera and Barcelona
The municipality of Almàssera has launched a new Meteorological Information and Emergency Response Service. Provided by the company Infooratge, the service includes the installation and management of a local weather station to provide real-time data for rapid decision-making during adverse weather events. This initiative is part of a disaster prevention plan led by Mayor Emilio José Belencoso, which also includes updating municipal emergency plans, acquiring a 4x4 vehicle for local police, and securing independent energy equipment for essential services.
In Barcelona, the Meteocat weather station located at the University of Barcelona's Faculty of Philosophy, Geography, and History is marking 20 years of data collection. The records from the Raval station highlight the intensifying urban heat island effect and global warming. Notably, the frequency of tropical nights—defined as nights with a minimum temperature of 25°C or higher—has increased significantly, rising from zero recorded instances in 2007 to over 40 annually since 2020. The station also recorded a peak rainfall of 190.8 mm on October 3, 2026.
