Meteotsunamis cause sea level oscillations in Guardamar and Torrevieja

Small meteotsunamis, characterized by gentle oscillations in sea levels caused by atmospheric instability, were recorded on Friday at the beaches of Guardamar del Segura and Torrevieja in Spain.

In Torrevieja, the Proyecto Mastral reported short intervals of rising and falling water levels. While these fluctuations were minor and caused no incidents on the sand or in the water, authorities noted that most beaches maintain green flags, with the exception of Los Locos.

In Guardamar del Segura, Mayor José Luis Sáez issued a warning via social media, explaining that changes in atmospheric pressure are driving these sea level oscillations. Local beach management described the movements as ‘anecdotal’ so far, noting that low swimmer attendance due to overcast skies has prevented any incidents.
