Metepec Mayor faces scrutiny over international travel amid legal proceedings

The State of Mexico Legislature is seeking to implement stricter regulations to prevent municipal presidents facing criminal proceedings from traveling abroad using public resources. This move follows a controversial trip to El Salvador by Metepec Mayor Fernando Flores Fernández, who is currently under judicial investigation for alleged abuse of authority.

Legislators from the Morena and Labor Party (PT) criticized the trip, arguing that officials under legal scrutiny should not be permitted to leave the country under the guise of official business. Deputy Octavio Martínez Vargas expressed concerns that such travel could be an attempt to evade justice and questioned the ethics of studying security models in El Salvador.

In the Metepec City Council, Councilman Omar García Mendieta also challenged the mayor regarding the lack of transparency and tangible results from his international travels. García Mendieta demanded information regarding the costs of these trips, who covered the expenses, and what specific benefits or agreements have been secured for the municipality, stating that the city needs results rather than a mayor collecting passport stamps.
