Methane regulation efforts target oil and gas emissions in U.S

Legislative and regulatory efforts are intensifying to curb methane emissions from the oil and gas industry in the United States.

In Congress, Representative Luz Rivas has introduced the Methane Pollution Accountability Act. The bill aims to hold companies responsible for pollutants released through venting, flaring, and leaking on federal lands. Proponents argue the legislation is necessary to protect environmental justice communities from increased rates of respiratory illnesses, such as asthma, and other serious health conditions caused by harmful emissions.

At the state level, the New Mexico Environment Department has proposed a new rule to accelerate the detection and repair of major methane leaks. The proposal would allow the state to use third-party tools, including satellites and aircraft, to identify large releases. Under the proposed mandate, operators would be required to investigate and repair identified leaks within three days. Officials state that quicker detection will reduce climate impact, minimize air pollution, and prevent the waste of natural resources.
