Methods for recovering deleted files on Windows systems
Users can employ several methods to retrieve lost data on Windows systems without necessarily relying on third-party software. The primary step is to check the Recycle Bin, where items are temporarily stored before permanent removal. If the bin has been emptied, recovery may still be possible through built-in features.
File History and OneDrive serve as critical recovery tools if they were previously enabled. File History allows users to restore previous versions of files or folders by accessing the ‘Restore previous versions’ option in File Explorer. Cloud services like OneDrive also provide a secondary recycle bin for data retrieval.
For cases where no backups exist, Microsoft offers a free Windows File Recovery app. It is recommended to minimize computer usage immediately after data loss to prevent new files from overwriting the space marked as free. Additionally, checking for application-generated temporary files may occasionally yield partial or full versions of lost documents.
