Methods to prevent pumpkin rot and decay

To prolong the lifespan of pumpkins used for decoration or carving, experts suggest a multifaceted approach involving cleaning, sanitizing, and environmental control. Pumpkin rot is primarily caused by fungi and bacteria that thrive in moist environments, especially once the protective skin is breached through carving or natural cracks.

One effective method to prevent mold and black mildew in carved jack-o’-lanterns is to spray them with a diluted bleach and water solution. According to Clorox, this mixture breaks down into table salt and water when exposed to air and sunlight, making it safe for the environment and local wildlife after use.

In the United States, pumpkin production is a significant industry. According to the USDA, the production value in top-producing states increased by 7 percent, rising from $132 million in 2021 to $141 million in 2023. While Illinois, Indiana, and Pennsylvania are the leading producers, pumpkin cultivation occurs across all states.
