Greece inaugurates largest standalone battery storage plant in Thessaly

Greece has inaugurated its largest standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Nea Karyes, Larissa. The 330 MW / 790 MWh facility was developed by a joint venture between METLEN Energy & Metals and the Karatzis Group, representing a €170 million investment supported by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attended the ceremony, emphasizing that storage infrastructure is essential for integrating renewable energy and ensuring energy security. METLEN Chairman Evangelos Mytilineos noted that such projects are vital for industrial competitiveness and managing energy costs. However, he also highlighted that current legal limits of 500 MW per investor may restrict the country's ability to reach its goal of 4 GW of storage by 2028.

Separately, EnEarth Greece is advancing its CO2 storage project at Prinos. The company is planning the installation of the ‘OMEGA’ offshore platform in the Kavala Gulf during late 2026. EnEarth has requested an exception to use the Dutch floating crane ‘HEBO-LIFT 10’ due to a lack of suitable Greek-flagged vessels with the required 2,200-ton lifting capacity.
