Metlen partners with Thales for Greek defense space program
Metlen Energy & Metals, Thales Alenia Space, and Thales Hellas have signed a cooperation agreement to prepare for opportunities within Greece’s future defense satellite communications program. The partnership aims to support Greece’s strategic autonomy and security in the space sector while fostering the domestic industrial ecosystem through technology transfer and skill development.
The agreement establishes a framework to evaluate how the companies' combined expertise can contribute to an integrated defense satellite system. Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales and Leonardo, will provide expertise in secure telecommunications satellites and ground infrastructure.
A key component of the collaboration involves Metlen’s M Technologies division, which may integrate its gallium production capabilities into the supply chains for future satellites manufactured by Thales Alenia Space. Gallium is a critical material for high-frequency semiconductors and radar payloads. This cooperation is intended to strengthen European supply chain independence for critical spaceborne microelectronics.
